Do people get removed automatically for inactivity after so long?

Hello,
Yes, the game will remove players from a league who are inactive for a certain time. 
Rookie- 30 days
Pro- 60 days
Elite- 90 days.

As well, there's an explanation if the game removes you; "due to inactivity".
