Research in red with disparity

Hi Guys,

New to the game. I'm looking at my research screen and am only getting one check box appear as green for acceleration as there appears to be a 1 point disparity. Looking at the other big 4 there appears to be bigger disparities however when checked the box is red. Can someone explain this mechanic and is it still worth me attempting to research one of these other fields despite the red box? Or are these just gains from suppliers they have that I can't research to make up?

Red means you are the best. The disparity may be compared to your car last race due to research or design points you have spent. don't bother researching them unless you are only 1 point or less behind in all other attributes that are active.

Does that mean gains are still possible? I only got the acceleration point. I'm thinking now it's to do with supplier difference.

It has nothing to do with supplier difference, that's added on separately. Gains are possible but Incredibly unlikely so don't bother researching them if you are the best.
