League race distance

Hi Matt.

An interesting question which has prompted a debate amongst us Mods, so thanks for that.

Yes, you can definitely change the race distance (duration) within the season and yes, this can definitely be done both on the web browser and mobile app. So a big tick in the "definitive answer" box for those two questions.

Where it all becomes a bit vague is the timing. According to the help  text on "Edit League / Schedule" tab...

Race start and duration changes apply from the race(s) after next to allow for adjusting strategies, etc.

So my take on this is as follows.
Assume your league runs at 50% distance and you want to run race No. 4 at 100% distance.
After race 2 has finished and before race 3 starts you edit the distance to 100%. Because the changes don't take effect until the "race after next", race 3 will run at 50% (original setting) but race 4 will run at 100% distance.
After race 3 has finished but before race 4 starts you reset the distance to 50%. Race 4 will run at 100% and race 5 and all subsequent races will run at 50%.

I have a test league which runs at 23:00 UK time. I have adjusted both race distance and speed, the number of laps for tonight's race is unchanged but by tomorrow morning I will be able to let you know whether the following race has been adjusted which would mean the above theory is correct.

Test completed. I have also been given important information from another Mod, Gustavo Heiden and Bruno Brown has run some additional tests to check our assumptions. So it's something of a Moderator team effort and between us I think we now understand precisely how it works...

• We confirm that it is possible to change race length and/or race speed within the current season.


• This can be accomplished by the league host using either the mobile app or web browser.


• The changes come into effect 24 hours after they are made and saved. So in a daily race league this will be the race after next, but in leagues where some days do not have a scheduled race it may be the next race.

Assuming your league races at 21:00 and normally runs 100% distance and 2.0x speed but you would like to run race number 5 at 75% distance and 1.5x speed and then return to normal from race 6 onwards...

• You must edit the league settings before 21:00 hrs the day before race 5 is due to run. In a daily league this will actually be before race 4 but race 4 won't be altered because it runs less than 24 hours after the changes were made.


• To reset the league back to the standard 100% distance, 2.0x speed for race 6 and beyond you will again need to make the changes greater than 24 hours before race 6 takes place, i.e. before 21:00 the day before race 6 is due to run.

When editing the league settings don't forget to save the changes.

Yes Matt, your procedure is correct. The reason you're locked in after race 4 finishes is because if you change anything at this point, in a daily league it is already less than 24 hours before race 5 runs so any changes will only affect race 6.

I see no reason for a limit. I expect you could run every race of the season at a different distance and/or speed to the previous one if your host has the time to organise it. Not being a computer geek I have no idea whether this would place additional load on the servers or potentially cause glitches if hundreds of leagues start doing it. So beware and don't complain if something the devs never envisaged users to do turns out to cause unexpected side effects.
