Choosing pit garage

How is decided who gets which pit garage? Is it just random?

I think it's decided off of what number the car is

I think it's down to championship position 

In a 1 car league, 1st in the pre-season standings gets garage 1, 2nd garage 2 etc, then 17th garage 1 and 18th garage 2 etc. At some tracks garage 1 is first, at some it is last. Often at the end of a season, it randomly moves someone down in the pre-season standings, which should be determined by last season's results but can have anomalies.
In a 2 car league, 1st gets garage 1 through to 16th in garage 16.

That checks out. That would explain why a guy who finished last season 1st but then moved to like 28th position in pre-season has pitbox so far from others that finished 2nd-5th.

But when 2 people have the same garage and they pit at the same time does the second one have to wait till the pitstop of the first person is completed?

Only in 2 car leagues i think
