It is quite noticeable, or at least it is the impression, that the 3d animations (wheel to wheel) are forcing/manipulating the cars, pushing them back and forth. To me that's terrible, almost as if the 3d mode is adjusting the simulations to better fit the visuals.
My suggestion is to exclusively use the ghosting system until wheel to wheel is perfected.
