Before each thread there are what look like 'speech boxes'. Why are some green and some grey?

Hi Chris
            I believe a green box indicates a thread you have not viewed yet, or that has new posts since you last viewed it.

A grey box indicates you have already viewed it.


Edit: I'm sure this is how it should work, but it looks like it can be a little temperamental  from time to time. Working for me on the majority of posts though.
